Mountain State Spotlight is an independent, civic news organization that tells stories of importance to West Virginians about the issues and challenges facing our communities.
With a team of seasoned editors and aggressive reporters, we will produce journalism that exposes abuses of power by government, business and other institutions, and keeps after the story until positive changes are made. We will explain complex issues, and illustrate how public policy decisions affect real West Virginians. We will lift up the voices of those who might not otherwise be heard.
We will be focusing on major issues including public health threats, economic development challenges, environmental issues, and government accountability. Our goal is to become the definitive source of information about the state.
Join us on Zoom at noon on Tuesday, March 9, when Managing Editor Erica Peterson will share the story behind this exciting new media opportunity.
Erica Peterson has more than a decade of experience as a reporter, editor and newsroom manager in both West Virginia and Kentucky. She started her career as a reporter with West Virginia Public Broadcasting, then covered energy and the environment for years as a reporter at Louisville Public Media where her reporting took her into rivers, coal mines and World War II-era bunkers.
Most recently, Erica oversaw the large local and regional newsroom at Louisville Public Media as the director of news and programming. She holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Carleton College and a master’s degree in journalism from Northwestern University.
